Currently, the Coast Guard Reserve offers the Selected Reserve Direct Commission (SRDC) Program.

Selected Reserve Direct Commission (SRDC) Program

The SRDC Program offers a means for you to join the Coast Guard Reserve as an officer and serve part-time in the SRDC Program. As a Reserve officer, you can continue your civilian employment while serving on military duty an average of two days a month and two weeks a year.

If you're considering joining the SRDC Program, here are some things you should consider first: you must make a four-year commitment to the Coast Guard. All applicants for the January 2012 SRDC panel must have prior military service.  No waivers will be entertained for work experience equivalent to military service.

To apply for a SRDC Direct Commission appointment, you must meet all eligibility requirements, complete a detailed application package, pass a personal interview, and be selected by a Coast Guard Recruiting Command selection panel. Basic requirements are listed below.

Basic Requirements

Age: Between 21 and 36 years old.
(Cannot have reached your 37th birthday as of 30 September of the year you apply)

Education: Baccalaureate or higher degree, or if you are currently an E5 in the Coast Guard or Coast Guard Reserve, 60 semester hours at a degree-granting college or university. (Cumulative GPA 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.)

Qualifying Tests: Applicant requires one of the following: 

All applicants must provide a qualifying score on the SAT, ACT, or ASVAB. No waivers will be considered. Minimum qualifying scores are as follows:

  • SAT Reasoning Test: Combined 1100 on Mathematics and Critical Reading.
  • SAT (taken prior to 1 April 1995): Combined 1000 on Mathematics and Verbal.
  • ACT: 23.
  • ASVAB: 109 on ASVAB General Technical (GT) Aptitude Area after 1 July 2004;110 prior to 1 July 2004. The GT score is obtained by combining the VE (Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension) and AR (Arithmetic Reasoning) test scores.

All applicants must have prior military service: This Prior Service must be less than 10 years of active duty in another service and less than 14 years of previous military service (active or reserve) outside the Coast Guard which applies toward retirement.

Medical:

  • Have an approved Coast Guard commissioning physical
  • Normal color vision
  • Good physical health
  • Meet Coast Guard weight standards
