The Coast Guard Reserve offers many programs to fit your needs:
Split Training - Split Training is ideal for students (including high school juniors age 17), teachers, and professionals with seasonal employment age 17-31. The program allows you to attend 8 weeks of basic training, return home, report to your unit, and then attend advanced training at a later date.
Consecutive Training - Consecutive Training is offered to those between the ages 17-31 with less than 60 semester hours of college, no prior service and skills that do not relate to Coast Guard job fields. You can attend the 8 weeks of basic training and advanced training consecutively.
Direct Entry Petty Officer Program - If you are between 27 and 40 years of age with a professional skill or prior military service that relates to a Coast Guard job field, you may be able to enlist at an advanced pay grade with greater responsibility (E-4). You will attend 3 weeks of condensed basic training at Cape May, NJ, then report directly to your duty station without additional training.
The Coast Guard Reserve also values civilian education. If you currently have 60 semester hours or more and are between the ages of 27 and 40, you may enlist at an advanced pay grade (E-3). You will attend 3 weeks of training at Cape May, NJ, then attend specialized training. Please note: in some situations, you could be sent to your duty station after completion of the condensed 3 week basic training, then to specialized training.
Prior-Military Service - Use your previous experience to continue building points toward retirement. Depending upon your prior military occupation and age, up to 40 for some programs, you may qualify. You will attend 3 weeks of training at Cape May, NJ, attend specialized training, then report to your duty station. Please note: in some situations, you could be sent to your duty station after completion of the condensed 3 week basic training, then to specialized training.
