CONTACT A RECRUITER
Thank you for your interest in serving in the United States Coast Guard! As the premier military maritime law enforcement agency, the Coast Guard is a highly selective service with many qualified applicants competing for limited positions each year. Due to increasingly high standards for accession, fully qualified applicants are not guaranteed accession into the Coast Guard. Obtaining a position in this service is a very competitive process that takes into account the strengths of each applicant along with service-wide needs. Only some fully qualified applicants will be offered a position in the Coast Guard. A successful pre-screen is only the first stage of the qualification process. Applicants must also be medically cleared by the local Military Entrance Processing Station as well as successfully complete a National Police Record Check, Credit Check, and Security Clearance. At any of these points, additional information may reveal an applicant to be unsuitable for Coast Guard service due to excessive debt, medical disqualifications, criminal history, or other reasons. The United States Coast Guard admires your desire to serve our nation and wishes you well as you compete for the privilege of serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Because the job we do is highly sensitive and could involve national security issues, Coast Guard recruitment must follow certain criteria which includes:
- You must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien.
- You must be between the ages of 17-27 (up to age 32 if attending an A school) for active duty. (If you are 17, you'll need parental consent.)
- Reservists must be between 17-39. Prior-service personnel should contact their local recruiter for specific programs.
- You must have a high school diploma. GEDs are accepted in very rare circumstances.
- You can have no more than two dependents.
As part of the recruitment process, you will have to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test and a military entrance medical exam.
You will undergo a credit check, security clearance check and a criminal record review. (2nd and 3rd degree misdemeanors and or felony convictions are disqualifying.)
